Volume 11, Issue 7 Air temperature is a measure of how hot or cold the air is. It is the most commonly measured weather parameter. We present global fields of surface temperature change over the two 20‐year periods of greatest warming this century, 1925–1944 and 1978–1997. The average annual surface air temperature anomaly over land north of 60° N for October 2016-September 2017 was the second highest (after 2015-2016), in the observational record beginning in 1900. This is an increase of 3.5° C since the beginning of the 20th Century, and the largest annual increase since 1995.
