This museum is established in the former home of the famous frontiersman, Kit Carson, whose life is depicted by a 20min-film, period objects and documents. In 1843, Carson purchased it as a wedding present for his bride. A good example of Spanish Colonial architecture, it is now owned by the local Masonic fraternity, and serves as a museum dedicated to Carson's life.It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963.

Kentucky-born Carson, trapper, scout, guide and Indian agent and fighter, took part in the wars against the Native American peoples, and rose to fame during his lifetime. Another equestrian statue can be seen in Trinidad, Colorado.
